Repointing or rebedding ridge caps

Bedding is the mortar that supports ridge caps. Pointing seals and finishes their exposed edges. Repointing may be enough when the caps and bedding are firm. Loose caps or failed bedding need the support repaired, with any broken caps or nearby tiles dealt with as well.

Checking ridge caps and agreeing the repairs

Inspect ridge and hip caps for movement, missing or cracked mortar, displaced tiles and nearby water marks. Do not try to test caps yourself.
List the sections needing repointing or rebedding, replacement caps, nearby tile repairs, materials and safe access in the quote.
Complete the agreed work and check the repaired ridge caps and nearby tiles. Explain any other damage that needs separate work.

The size of a surface crack does not show how sound the bedding is underneath. We check the caps, mortar, roof pitch and access before recommending the repair. A new surface finish cannot replace failed bedding.

The difference between repointing and rebedding

Repointing renews the exposed finish along the ridge caps. Rebedding replaces the supporting mortar beneath them. We check both before recommending which work is needed.

Ridge sections and work listed in the quote

The quote identifies the ridge or hip sections, the repointing or rebedding needed, any broken caps or adjoining tiles, materials and roof access. Any further investigation is explained in writing.

Checking nearby tiles during ridge repairs

We check the cap position and nearby tile overlaps. Tiles that are loose, broken or part of the same leak path may need repair with the ridge.
